As Tropical Storm Hermine approaches the Garden State, many municipalities are preparing for any potential impacts the storm my pose during the Labor Day Weekend.

The National Weather Service issued tropical storm advisories for counties along the New Jersey shoreline, as Hermine may cause coastal flooding due to heavy rain and storm surge.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden told News 12 New Jersey county emergency managers are gearing up for the storm. Golden urged residents and visitors to enjoy the weekend, but stay alert to the storm track and have an emergency kit ready in case it's needed.

Crews were out building up sand dunes in Belmar Friday afternoon in an effort to protect the town from potential storm surges.

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty says that the biggest issues facing the town are power outages and potential flooding.

"Once the power goes out, it may be out for a while and people should plan for that as well," he says.

Further north in Hudson County, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer and the Hoboken emergency management team were making sure the flood pumps were functional, as well as going over plans for an emergency.

Hoboken is a city that often floods. The city has spent millions on new flood pumps to control the flood waters. 

Mayor Zimmer wants to warn the city residents to take precautions if they are going away for the long weekend.

"It's probably not a good idea to just go away and leave your car parked in a flood-prone area," Zimmer says. "I would encourage people to not just move out and leave your car for the weekend."

New Jersey's utility companies say that they are also taking precautions for the storm. They will have extra crews on standby in case powerlines are knocked down and they are setting up flood barriers to prevent flooding at substations.
