8-year-old girl shot in the head in Camden dies

An 8-year-old girl who was shot in the head by a stray bullet in Camden has died, according to a Facebook post by her father.

"My baby Gabrielle Hill Carter is no longer with us. Thank you all for [your] prayers," Will Phillips posted.

Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson says the gunfire broke out around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 900 block of South Eighth Street. Several men opened fire on an intended target, and the girl was caught in the crossfire. Thomson says the girl was across the street from her house when she was shot.

Authorities say the shooters jumped in a car and fled the scene following the shooting. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the area.

Thomson says police are asking for anyone with information on the shooting to come forward. A $12,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone who might have information about the shooting is asked to call 215-546-TIPS or 877-345-TIPS.
