5-year-old girl, grandmother die in Little Ferry house fire; several others injured

An explosion and fast-moving fire in Little Ferry has claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl and her grandmother.
Fire officials say the fire broke out in a three-family home on the 100 block of Washington Avenue. Five other residents and three firefighters were injured.
A police officer on patrol heard a pop and found the home on fire around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. He helped firefighters rescue the residents.
The little girl succumbed to her injuries at Hackensack Hospital Wednesday afternoon. The grandmother died from her injuries a few hours later. The girl's mother was also hurt and broke several bones when she jumped out a window.
The grandmother was hanging from a third-story window when she was found by firefighters.
Other residents who were injured sustained broken bones jumping from the structure or suffered smoke inhalation.
Three police officers who went into the burning home were treated for injuries. One twisted a knee and the others suffered smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The American Red Cross is assisting the families affected by the fire.
