Family members have identified the victims in a fatal fire in Belmar as 86-year-old Bill Oberschewen and his adult son Mark.
The father and son rented the home on the 200 block of 14th Avenue year-round, according to family. The fire broke out just after 9:30 p.m. Monday. Their dog also perished in the fire.
Neighbors say that Mark Oberschewen was engaged to be married and had two children from a previous relationship. Those children were not in the home at the time of the fire. Neighbors also say that Mark took care of his father Bill, who had trouble getting around.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, but don't believe it to be suspicious in nature. There is speculation that the fire was started by a cigarette. Neighbors say that Mark was trying to quit smoking.
Friends and neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that both men were very friendly and that they are devastated to hear of the deaths.
