17-year-old Leander Williams killed in Jersey City shooting; 2 others injured

A teen was killed and two girls were injured when gunfire erupted Tuesday night in Jersey City.

The incident happened in the area of a community center on Communipaw Avenue. Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that there was a party being held at the center at the time of the shooting.

Police say 17-year-old Leander Williams was shot just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and died around midnight.

Investigators say they also found a 16-year-old girl with an apparent wound to her upper body sitting in a chair. Police say that she appeared to be disoriented, but was treated and released. A 12-year-old girl was also injured. She was also taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

A spokesperson for the Jersey City mayor's office says that the shooting was not random and that Williams was targeted. The spokesperson says Williams had a loaded gun on him at the time of the shooting.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is involved in the investigation, along with the Jersey City Police Department. Anyone who may have any information about the shooting is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at 201-915-1345.
