Gov. Chris Christie says that a higher percentage of students met or exceeded expectations on a standardized test the state administers.
The governor unveiled the new statistics on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) on Tuesday during a statehouse news conference.
Gov. Christie says that the gains are encouraging and validate the state's approach to testing.
The state also unveiled data showing that the number of students participating in the tests of math and English language skills has risen.
Christie and Education Commissioner David Hespe say this shows parents are more accepting of the PARCC test.
Some teachers, unions and parents groups opposed the test, in part because it continually ratchets up the stakes for students and schools. Some students and parents boycotted it.
