3-year-old girl struck, killed by vehicle; mother injured in Plainfield

A mother was injured and her 3-year-old daughter was killed after they were struck by a vehicle Wednesday in Plainfield.
Police say the incident happened around 9 a.m. as the mother and her children were crossing Park Avenue at the intersection of West Second Street.
Both the mother and the 3-year-old girl were struck by a red Toyota. The other children were not hurt, according to witnesses.
The mother and young girl were taken to the hospital, where the girl later died. The mother remains in critical condition, according to police.
Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the intersection where the crash occurred is usually very busy and that mothers and their children are often crossing at that location.
Police say that the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. It was not immediately known if charges would be filed.
