House fire in Irvington claims life of 18-year-old Jeremiah Maxfield

An early morning fire in Irvington resulted in the death of a teenager.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says that 18-year-old Jeremiah Maxfield died after a fire started at 15 Arverne Terrace around 2 a.m.

Maxfield was pronounced dead several hours later. According to the prosecutor's office, two other people were also inside the home but were able to get out unharmed.

The damage from the fire was limited to the one home.

Essex County prosecutors are still on the scene trying to figure out the cause of the fire and why the young man wasn't able to make it out.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the family that was displaced by the fire. Four people received temporary lodging, food and clothing provided by the agency.
