3-year-old girl drowns at Pequannock Valley Park
A 3-year-old girl drowned while swimming at the waterfront in Pequannock Valley Park Monday afternoon, according to police.
Pequannock police say the child's mother told lifeguards at the park that she couldn't find her daughter. Swimmers were evacuated from the water while lifeguards searched for the girl.
Police say the girl was quickly found and lifeguards began performing CPR while waiting for emergency personnel.
Paramedic and ambulance crews took the girl to Chilton Medical Center for treatment, but the girl did not survive.
Officials say that the park will be closed pending an investigation. Residents are advised to check the Parks and Recreation website for information regarding a reopening date.
Grief counselors will be available at a nearby school for classmates of the girl.
A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday evening.
