Consumer Alert: Hiring the right contractor
Summertime is when many New Jersey residents choose to get work done around their homes.
Consumer experts say that choosing the right contractor is important to ensure that the work is done correctly and that the contractor is reputable.
News 12 New Jersey's Walt Kane says that there are some things consumers should and should not do when choosing the right person to work on their homes
Consumers should:
-Check to see if the contractor is registered with the state Division of Consumer Affairs. It's required by law.

-Find out how long the contractor has been in business.

-Check with the Division of Consumer Affairs, the Better Business Bureau, or a rating-style website to see if there are any complaints against the contractor.

-Get a written estimate from at least three contractors.

-Get a written contract from the contractor chosen. A contact protects the customer and contractor by spelling out what's included and what isn't.
Consumers should not:
-Hire a contractor who demands more than a third of the money up front, before work begins.

-Hire a contractor who says a contract is not needed.

-Hire a contractor who approaches them in the neighborhood and says he can give great deals.

-Make a final payment until all inspections are passed.
