NJ native, former ‘The Voice’ contestant Christina Grimmie fatally shot after concert
A New Jersey singer who was a contestant on the hit show 'The Voice' was fatally shot following a concert Friday night in Orlando, Florida.
Police say Marlton native Christina Grimmie signing autographs around 10:45 p.m. inside the Plaza Live Theater when a man armed with two guns approached and shot her. The shooter has been identified as 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl.
Officials say Grimmie's brother tackled Loibl to the ground, but police say Loibl fatally shot himself during the ensuing struggle.
Grimmie, 22, finished in third place in the sixth season of "The Voice." She had been discovered on YouTube, where her powerful renditions of hit songs racked up millions of views.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina says that the suspect apparently traveled from another city in Florida to Orlando specifically to confront her. Mina says the suspect didn't appear to know Grimmie personally and may have been a deranged fan, although the motive was still unknown.
Police credited the singer's brother, Marcus Grimmie, for tackling the gunman and preventing him from potentially hurting others. Around 120 other people were in The Plaza at the time. Loibl also had a hunting knife on him, police say.
Since news of the shooting broke, there has been an outpouring of tributes on social media from who knew Grimmie, including from "The Voice" judges.
"I'm stunned and disgusted and heartbroken that we lost that sweet little girl," Blake Shelton said on Twitter.
"I'm sad, shocked and confused... This just isn't fair," fellow judge Adam Levine posted on Instagram.
Another New Jersey "Voice" contestant, Jacquie Lee, roomed with Grimmie on tour. The duo became best friends. Lee posted a picture of the two of them on Instagram with the caption, "I will never understand this. I love you derp. Save a spot for me up there."
