A high school senior from Ocean County has been drafted by a Major League Baseball team.
Barnegat High School pitcher Jason Groome, 17, was projected during the spring to be the top overall pick during the MLB draft. He was chosen 12th overall.
Despite growing up in New Jersey, Groome says that he is a Red Sox fan.
He transferred from Florida's IMG Academy before this past season to finish his high school career at Barnegat.
Groome pitches lefty and has a record of 2-3 with a 0.77 ERA. He was suspended for 30 days by the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association for violating New Jersey's transfer rule.
Groome was expected to attend the draft in Secaucus but apparently changed his mind the day before.
Some say that since he is still in high school there are many variables for his career, including his level of maturity.
At least one other New Jersey native was drafted in the first round of picks. Jackson resident Matt Thaiss was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels. Thaiss is a catcher at the University of Virginia.
The Red Sox and Groome still have to negotiate a contract.
