(AP) - New Jersey has posted details of its proposed $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil over pollution around oil refineries in northern New Jersey.

The publication on the state environmental protection agency website starts the clock on a legal process that will stretch into June and provide the deal's vocal opponents an opportunity to persuade a judge to kill it.

News of the settlement came in early March, the culmination of an 11-year-old lawsuit that charged the company polluted the land and water around oil refineries in Linden and Bayonne.

The Department of Environmental Protection says the expected payout is the second largest natural resource settlement against a single corporate defendant in the country's history, with only the Exxon-Valdez payout larger.

However, the proposed settlement has become a political lightning rod because a report in the court documents estimated that the state could recover up to $8.9 billion. Democrats in the New Jersey Legislature have criticized Republican Gov. Chris Christie's administration for accepting pennies on the dollar.
