The state has given a new charter school in Trenton 90 days to shape up or ship out.
Students at Mercer Arts High School say the school needs help, and many parents are pulling their children out of the facility. Some parents say they were drawn to the school?s focus on the arts. However, those that are pulling their children out of the school say poor basic education is why they are leaving.
?It?s just a big review for me, no one is paying attention,? student Kayla Moore says. ?The classes are disruptive and we?re unable to learn anything.?
During a recent unannounced visit, state education monitors reported concerns with the curriculum and discipline. State monitors plan to make several more unannounced visits in the coming weeks. If nothing is done to fix the issues, the state says it may close the school before the 90-day deadline.
According to the state Department of Education, enrollment at the school has dropped by almost 30 students in the last few weeks.
