A Department of Health investigation is ongoing at University Hospital in Newark after health officials have concluded that a baby died in September after contracting a bacterial infection.
There have been four cases involving the acinetobacter baumannil bacteria, all connected to the neonatal intensive care unit at University Hospital.
Officials say the baby who died in September had been premature.
The patient was transferred to another facility after contracting the bacteria at University Hospital.
The Department of Health says the exact cause of death is still being investigated.
Hospital officials put out a statement saying, “University Hospital takes patient safety, including infection control, very seriously. We have been in regular communication with the Department of Health and continue to work closely with them to address this issue as quickly as possible."
The department was notified about the infection on Oct. 1 and have been investigating ever since.
They say they’ve found several major infection control deficiencies, including poor hand hygiene and handwashing as well issue with overall cleanliness and lack of intervention to prevent the transmission of bacteria.
City officials say there is no risk to the general population.
The Department of Health says it's requiring University Hospital to hire an Infection Control Practitioner.
The neo-natal unit at University Hospital will stay open. State officials say attempting to move children to another facility could pose more harm to their health.
