Stamford police are stepping up seat belt enforcement as part of their "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

Officers established a checkpoint Monday morning on Jefferson Street, where they were pulling over drivers and issuing tickets for those who weren't wearing seat belts.

In Connecticut, the fine for a seat belt violation is $92.

Officials say they timed the event to coincide with the busy travel around Memorial Day weekend. Police say the goal is to make the roads safer.

Officers say they'll have checkpoints set up for the next two weeks.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 48 percent of people killed in crashes in 2016 were not wearing seat belts. That number jumped to 56 percent for nighttime crashes.
