Portions of a three-story stairwell collapse at a condo in Fairfield, injuring two people.
The incident happened at 8 Kingsbridge Road.
A 54-year-old Towaco man fell around 20-25 feet from the third floor to the first floor, landing where he was then trapped by a heavy, broken piece of stairway hanging above him. Around 50 emergency personnel were on scene to help pull him out. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. Another 45-year-old man from Oakhurst reportedly had an injury to his back and was also transported to a hospital.
It is unknown at this time what their exact affiliation to the building is.
Responders on the scene included the Fairfield, Verona, West Caldwell, North Caldwell and Caldwell fire departments. The state’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, which is specially trained in these types of rescues, was mobilized to assist, as were the West Essex First Aid Squad and Atlantic Healthcare EMS.
"First responders did an excellent job In securing and making sure that no further damage or injury would happen. They did a great job of getting him out. I'm thankful that nothing it wasn't to the extent it could've been with those five people on the stairwell. It would've been much, much worse had five people fell that amount of distance," said Fairfield Police Department Chief Anthony Manna.
Police say there is no criminal activity related to this collapse but that hardware used to secure the stairs to the wall may have broke and gave way.
The job site was immediately shut down by the Fairfield Building Department until the accident is investigated by officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
