Someone is embedding disturbing images in children’s YouTube videos
Law enforcement agencies and child care experts are urging parents to be aware that some children’s videos posted on YouTube may contain disturbing images.
News 12 New Jersey has previously reported about the Momo Challenge, where a creepy picture of a woman appears online with instructions to commit dares – sometimes dangerous ones. Images of Momo have begun popping up in some children’s videos, like clips of the children’s show “Peppa Pig.” Some other children’s videos have instructions for how to commit suicide embedded in them.
Child experts say that it is a good reminder for parents to monitor what their children watch online and how much time they spend online.
"It can create things like post-traumatic stress. It can create depression, it can create anxiety because what we are exposing ourselves to is something that makes us feel helpless or hopeless,” says therapist Nancy Howard.
Howard says that children under 13 are still finding their identity and self and may not have the emotional capacity to deal with commands to hurt themselves or others. She says that she is a proponent of getting kids off their devices and on to other activities.
"Have them look at something else that offers that competing stimuli. Have them engage in activities that take them away from their devices. And have them refocus on the here and now - the actual world around them,” she says.
Some parents have also reported that things like the Momo challenge aren’t just targeting toddlers’ videos. There are also reports of the challenge appearing in videos about the popular video game “Fortnite” as well.
