Some residents and police officers think the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack is haunted, and with Halloween just two days away, News 12 New Jersey checked out the site of one of the most reported ghost stories in the state.

Though the jail has been closed for 15 years, some officers who have worked inside report a ghostly presence, spooky sounds of moaning and footsteps and an eerie feeling of violence. Some say the ghost of John Avery, a criminal who was hanged at the jail in 1872, lurks the hallways and empty cells.

The jail used to isolate New Jersey?s toughest criminals and murderers, but occasionally housed prisoners whose charges were less violent, like Frank Sinatra, who was jailed there in 1938 under the charge of ?seduction.?

The old jail is now listed as a historical landmark. The sheriff's top cops still have offices there, but many say they would rather deal with the criminals than the frightening ghosts lurking inside.
