A mix of snow, rain and sleet moved through New Jersey Tuesday, covering most of Hunterdon County in ice.
The snow began falling around 7 a.m., and then quickly transitioned over to sleet and freezing rain.
Plow trucks traveling Route 31 in Flemington had to scramble to keep up with the changing weather conditions.
“It's been pretty slick. Some of the back roads are definitely a little slippery. You gotta be careful. Make sure you go the speed limit and take all precautions, that's for sure,” said EJ Harrington of Kingwood.
Mayor Betsy Driver urged drivers to stay home until the storm passed, but traffic in the area trudged through the slush that accumulated on the streets.
"The more cars that are on the street the harder it is to keep the roads clear,” she said. “People do slide and if people are home, our crews can get out and keep the streets cleared and get it done as quickly as possible."
But some of the county’s children say that they were happy to have the day off, especially after such a snowless winter so far.
“We are going to go to this high school and we are going to go sledding,” said Mathias Rivera. “Then I’m going to play my game with my dad, and you know, just chill.”
Most of New Jersey saw a mix of snow and sleet Tuesday. The precipitation was expected to become mostly rain by Tuesday evening.
