Lawmakers from Jersey Shore towns are pushing back against a bill meant to fast-track offshore wind energy projects by taking away local control over transmission lines and other on-shore infrastructure.
A bill moving through the state Legislature would would give wind energy projects approved by the state the authority to build and use wires and associated infrastructure as long as they run underground on public property including streets, without local approval.
It appears to be an effort to head off local objections to one wind power project that would run cables under two of the state’s most popular beaches.
A top lawmaker promises changes to the bill.
