A Bergen County animal shelter is searching for a forever home for a terminally ill dog.
Autumn, a 7-year-old Rottweiler, came to the shelter with a leg issues. But a veterinarian quickly determined that she had bone cancer that had spread to Autumn’s chest.
“We’re hopeful that she has a few more good weeks,” says Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge Executive Director Megan Brinster. "What we hoped would be a story of a wonderful rehabilitation and rehoming has turned into a story of sadness, but also kind of hope because we're going to give Autumn the best time she has left.”
The shelter is now looking for someone to take Autumn in as a foster dog while she lives out her last days. Brinster says that they just want someone to give the dog a happy home.
"She just wants to be playing with toys, she wants to be pet. She wants to be with people. She just craves attention and companionship,” Brinster says.
The shelter says that while some calls have come in from families looking to foster Autumn, they haven’t been a perfect fit. But it has inspired some of those families to adopt other dogs that need a forever home.
"When they get older and they need a little more time and companionship, we'd love to see them leave the shelter,” Brinster says. "They are happy here, but they're in their golden years. We want them to have that whatever time they have left. So, if Autumn's not the right fit we have other wonderful dogs that can benefit from your home and your love."
For Autumn, the shelter is looking for a family that does not have any other dogs in their home.
Anyone who is interested should call the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge at 201-337-5180 or 201-337-2040.
