Seton Hall fire spurs change at NJ colleges, universities
Many New Jersey colleges and universities are making changes to prevent fires similar to the one that claimed the lives of three Seton Hall students in 1999. The upholstered furniture at The College of New Jersey?s (TCNJ) new library may look normal, but it's not. Each piece meets the strictest standards for fire resistance in the country. The school has been working to make more of its furniture fire resistant, including all dorm mattresses. Lawmakers may also soon make it a legal requirement if a proposed bill gets approved. Several other colleges and universities around the state have also been switching to fire-resistant furniture, including Seton Hall and Rutgers. A bill requiring schools to use fire-resistant furniture already passed the Assembly and will soon come up for a vote in the Senate.
