Senate OKs bill creating paid family leave for workers
The Senate narrowly passed a bill Monday creating a paid family leave measure for New Jersey workers.
If it is turned into law, any worker who has a new or adopted child or needs to stay home with a sick family member could take advantage of the paid family leave. The bill would provide six weeks off at two-thirds of a worker?s pay, up to about $500 a week. Workers who opt for the family leave plan would pay $33 a year from their paycheck.
Lawmakers added some forms of protection for businesses in the bill. The bill stipulates workers who take the leave would have to use up vacation and sick time first, which applies toward the six weeks.
Supporters of the plan say family leave is something every employee deserves. Opponents fear the plan is going to hurt New Jersey businesses that are already struggling.
The bill will now head to the Assembly for a vote.
