Security ramped up at Newark Liberty amid suspected U.K. airline plot
(08/10/06) NEWARK ? The break-up of a suspected terrorist plot against U.S.-bound commercial flights in the U.K. has resulted in a major security increase at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Investigators in Britain say a group of individuals planned to blow up as many as 10 flights using hidden liquid explosives. So far, police have rounded up 21 suspects. The terror threat level for all U.S.-bound flights from the U.K. has been raised to red, the highest on the Homeland Security scale.
At Newark Liberty, travelers found themselves blanketed with extra security measures Thursday morning. Signs informed travelers they would not be allowed to take any type of liquid or gel items on flights with the exception of medications and baby formula. For baby formula, security personnel must be able to link an adult to a baby. The labels on medications must match the ID of the traveler.
With Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) away in Europe on vacation, state Senate President Richard Codey (D-NJ) visited Newark Liberty and spoke with travelers. Codey assured everyone state officials were doing everything possible to keep flyers safe.
