Beachgoers say they were nearly shoulder-to-shoulder in Point Pleasant Beach Monday while parts of the beach were closed due to a replenishment project.
Jenkinson’s was forced to close three of the southernmost blocks of the beach while the Army Corps of Engineers completes the project, which started in May. This is coupled with parts of the northern beaches closed due to migrating birds.
“It was very crowded. A lot of people were bumping into each other,” said 7-year-old Christiana Moleski.
New Jersey lawmakers pleaded with the Army Corps to return to Point Pleasant Beach to add sand to the beaches after they say efforts in the spring fell short. A late-season nor’easter also hampered the efforts.
“I was here one day last week. By 1 p.m. I left. It was so crowded I couldn’t move,” said Jane Kohlrenken of Brick.
Representatives from Jenkinson’s Boardwalk say that they understanding that the timing is terrible. But they say that they cannot control the Army Corps’ schedule. They say that they hope to have the southern blocks open by the weekend.
The boardwalk and all businesses on the boardwalk are open.
The weekly Thursday night fireworks show was already moved due to the migrating birds. Officials say that they may have to be relocated once again.
