(AP) - Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell is the firstelected official arrested in last week's corruption sweep in NewJersey to resign.
Secaucus town administrator David Drumeler said he receivedElwell's resignation Tuesday afternoon, effective immediately.
Elwell's lawyer says his client is not admitting guilt and willdefend himself against the allegations.
Elwell is charged with accepting $10,000 from a federalcooperating witness in exchange for help on a building project inSecaucus.
The 64-year-old has been mayor since 1999 and faced re-electionin November.
Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez and Hoboken Mayor PeterCammarano III also were arrested last week but have refused to stepdown.
