Search for sunken boat to resume Wednesday
The search to recover a sunken boat involved in Sunday’s deadly crash during the Offshore Grand Prix boat races in Point Pleasant Beach is expected to resume Wednesday.
Officials say that the New Jersey State Police will be involved in the search Wednesday, which should make the efforts easier.
Crews were out in the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday trying to find the boat named “Smith Brothers” in an effort to learn more about the crash.
The crash happened between turns one and two on the first lap of the first race. Officials said “Smith Brothers” ran up and over “Repeat Offender” after the race boat veered suddenly. “Smith Brothers” then cartwheeled and sank almost immediately.
“Repeat Offender” throttle man David Raabe, of Lacey Township, was identified as the racer killed in the crash. The boat’s driver, James Byrne, of Nutley, was hospitalized in critical condition.
The two crew members of “Smith Brothers” survived.
Races were immediately halted and canceled following the crash.
Once “Smith Brothers” is located, divers will go into the water and try to assess the damage and determine if the boat is salvageable.
Balloons will be attached to the vessel to bring it back to the surface.
