A Bergen County borough looking to save money on fuel is testing a hybrid SUV for its police force.
Rutherford Councilman John Genovesi says if the test case goes well, all the vehicles in the department's current fleet could be replaced.
"My full intention is, over the next five years, to convert the entire fleet over to a hybrid fleet," Genovesi says.
After one month on the road, Capt. George Egbert says the difference in gas mileage has been significant.
"So far it's about 17 gallons per mile as compared to the Crown Victorias we have, which [are] about six miles per gallon," Egbert says.
