Rutgers University investigating football coach Kyle Flood
Rutgers University is investigating whether football coach Kyle Flood violated team or NCAA rules by contacting a faculty member about the academic status of a player.
NJ.com first reported that Rutgers University's office of general counsel is investigating the severity of the alleged violation and the university confirmed its office of ethics had the matter brought to its attention about a week ago.
Flood says he is unaware of an investigation and had not been contacted by university officials about the issue.
Flood could be in violation of NCAA rules regarding extra benefits and university rules by communicating with a faculty member about a player's course work. If Flood was found to have violated rules regarding extra benefits he could face a possible NCAA suspension or dismissal by Rutgers.
Meanwhile, the university has suspended star receiver Leonte Carroo and quarterback Chris Laviano, along with three other players, for the first half of its season opener against Norfolk State for a curfew violation.
The suspension of Laviano means Hayden Rettig will start at quarterback for Rutgers. The two have been competing for the top job since the spring. Rettig is a sophomore transfer from LSU who sat out last season.
Also suspended for the opener at home on Sept. 5 against an FCS opponent are punter Tim Gleeson, defensive back Ruhan Peele and linebacker Kevin Marquez.
Carroo is a senior and one of the top receivers in the Big Ten. He had 55 catches for 1,086 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
