Rutgers students forced out of dorms after power outages
About 3,000 Rutgers students were forced to vacate their dorms due to ongoing power issues on the Cook/Douglass campus in New Brunswick.
Students were told around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday that they will be provided temporary lodging at the Rutgers Athletic Center, Werblin Hall and Livingston Recreation Center, which are located on other campuses.
An email sent to students said that they were not allowed to stay in the affected dorms because it was a "fire-safety issue." Students were advised to only take essential items such as bedding, toiletries and clothing for two days.
Students were allowed to stay with friends on other campuses if they chose, but were asked to sign up on a website so that the school knew where they would be.
PSEG has been working for the last few days to fix an issue they say is in the campus's distribution system. The issue is affecting 90 buildings, including 39 residence halls. Some classes were canceled Wednesday as well.
School officials did not say if classes would be canceled on Thursday.
