Rutgers-Eagleton Poll: Gov. Christie approval rating lower than ever after Bridge-Gate
Gov. Chris Christie's approval rating has slipped to its lowest percentage ever in the aftermath of the Bridge-Gate trial, according to a new Rutgers-Eagleton poll.
According to the poll, only 19 percent of New Jersey registered voters have a favorable opinion of the governor. This is down four points from six weeks ago when the trial first began.
The poll also found that Gov. Christie has a 20 percent job approval rating, which is down six points from the last time it was polled.
"Gov. Christie is now just a few points shy of the record low ratings set by governors Byrne, Florio, and DiFrancesco in Eagleton's 45 years of polling on New Jersey governors," said Eagleton Center interim director Ashley Koning in a statement.
Gov. Christie was not indicted in the Bridge-Gate scandal, but several witnesses testified that the governor was told about the Fort Lee lane closings while they were occurring.
Former Christie allies Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni were convicted last week of conspiring to close the George Washington Bridge access lanes as retribution against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for refusing to endorse Gov. Christie's 2013 re-election.
The governor has maintained that he had no prior knowledge of lane closings and reiterated that point in an interview with "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose Monday morning.
The Eagleton results come from a statewide poll of 772 New Jersey adults. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points.
