A Morris County mother says that her 6-year-old son with special needs was abused by a school aide.
Kim Yamashita says that an aide abused her son because he was misbehaving. The incident at Kennedy Elementary School in the Succasunna section of Roxbury Township is also outlined in a police report. The report states that the aide picked Colton up “by his ankles and shook him for several seconds while he was hanging upside down."
“He screamed and she released him, says the police report. My son says how she released him was she just dropped him,” Yamashita says.
Colton has ADD and a speech problem, according to his mother. He is also prone to outbursts.
Another aide in the classroom reported Colton was acting out leading up to the incident and that his aide told the kindergarten student she would “hang him by his toes if he did not behave.”
The incident happened March 23. Yamashita says that while the incident was reported to school officials by noon on that day, she did not find out until hours later.
“My husband and I were not notified until 3:58 p.m. that this had happened to our son. They had him all day at the school and never notified us once,” she says.
Roxbury police responded to the school to investigate the incident. A police report states that an official with the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office advised that the incident “was not a criminal matter and recommended no criminal investigation.”
But Yamashita says that she pushed for an investigation and now the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is involved in the case.
Yamashita says that she is considering civil action against the school district. She says that the aide no longer works at the school.
News 12 New Jersey reached out to the Roxbury Township School District for comment on the incident, but did not hear back.
