Residents confused about who owns building
Residents in one Newark apartment building say there is some confusion over who is the landlord of their building, and they now fear they will soon be on the streets.
The people who live at the South 18th Street apartment say they have been paying a man they thought was their landlord. However, a woman recently came by the building and told them the man was no longer the landlord and that the building was in foreclosure.
"We don't know who we are paying our money to," says one resident who did not wish to be named.
Several tenants kept paying rent to the landlord in cash, as requested. They've raised concerns about the building with the landlord, and even saw the landlord's son do maintenance.
The landlord they were paying may not be the actual landlord, and now they're not even sure he owns the building.
Several tenants received a copy of a foreclosure complaint that listed a bank as the possible owner.
"They told us not to pay [the landlord]...they said anybody could look online and find a building for foreclosure and act like they are the landlord," says residents Dacell Bradley.
News 12 New Jersey reached out to the man who is supposedly the landlord the tenants have been paying, but calls were not returned.
Some residents say they have court days that will hopefully get them answers to what is happening.
