Report: Former Murphy staffer accused of rape to testify before committee
A former Murphy administration staffer who was accused of rape has been subpoenaed to testify before a state committee looking into the circumstances around his employment, according to a report by NJ.com.
Murphy administration official Katie Brennan accused Al Alvarez, the former chief of staff of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority, of sexually assaulting her while they both worked on Gov. Phil Murphy’s gubernatorial campaign. Brennan was a volunteer at the time.
Brennan says that she reported the crime to the Murphy campaign, the Murphy administration and to law enforcement officials, but felt that nothing was done to get her justice.
Alvarez went on to be hired by the Murphy administration to work for the Schools Development Authority.
A state committee has been holding hearings to determine who hired Alvarez for his position – a question that so far no one has been able to answer.
Alvarez has denied the allegations but resigned from his position once the allegations were made public last year. Two county prosecutor’s offices have declined to file charges against Alvarez.
The former staffer is expected to testify before the committee next week.
