Residents in Passaic were placed in an emergency shelter after a three-story apartment building partially collapsed Thursday night.
The partial collapse affected about 50 residents from two buildings, including the building next door.
Residents say it happened between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. They say they heard a loud noise before the apartment building shook and began to collapse. No injuries were reported, and all residents were evacuated.
The Red Cross says it opened a temporary shelter for families affected by the collapse. About 23 people have received assistance. The shelter is located at Mahatma Ghandi School #25 at 64 Parker Ave.
Mayor Hector Lora told News 12 New Jersey the building owners were responsive and will assist the engineers on scene, who will look into the structural issues of the building.
A man who identified himself as the building manager told News 12 that the building is not in bad shape and said he believes it’s an issue on the foundation with some soil. Recent heavy rains may have contributed.
Officials say the families will not be able to return until it's determined that the building is safe.
