Recovering officer: 'I'm lucky to be alive'
A Bergen County police officer who lost a leg after a February motorcycle crash says he now believes in miracles.
Sgt. Bill Koretsky doesn't hesitate when he sums up his past six months.
"I'm lucky to be alive," he says.
Doctors needed to amputate the officer's leg after the motorcycle he was riding hit a box truck. Koretsky, a 20-year veteran of the department, was leading a funeral procession on Route 9W just over the New York border at the time.
"I remember the rivets ... sliding down my face, then my left leg got caught up in the rear tires," he says. "I landed in the trees. I thought I was dead because I couldn't see how I could live through this."
Koretsky credits his emergency responders and the dozens of fellow officers who donated blood with saving his life.
After one month and two surgeries, Koretsky began to learn how to walk again with a new titanium leg. He says he's getting the hang of the new leg and looks forward to getting back to work, even though his department hasn't made a decision on his return yet.
"There's still a lot of room for improvement, but I hope to be there as soon as I can," he says.
