Several New Jersey school districts were effectively shut down Monday due to protests against property tax reform.Teachers from those districts joined thousands of other state workers outside the Statehouse to protest proposals to relieve property taxes. The plans would affect the pensions and other benefits of state employees. The protesters say there has to be a better way to reduce taxes than taking out of the pockets of state workers.Governor Corzine (D-NJ) had originally blocked the suggested reforms, but sent a letter Sunday night to legislative leaders encouraging them to move forward.
