The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating what could be the remains of a human placenta and fetal membranes found in a plastic bag in the lake at Overpeck County Park in Leonia.
The lake is open for boating once again after being closed for a time during the initial investigation.
Officials say that someone cleaning the lake Wednesday pulled a bag out of the water with the material. Officials say the bag contained “what appeared to be a human placenta and fetal membranes."
The Bergen County medical examiner will now attempt to confirm what exactly was inside of the bag.
The prosecutor’s office says it won’t release any further information until the report from the medical examiner is complete.
