Controversy has erupted over a proposed outdoor space in a Morris County community.

Pequannock Township is considering building a skate park in Pompton Plains, but those against the idea say taxpayers should not have to foot the bill.

Opposed residents said one of their main concerns is that the skate park would be built in a flood zone.

"I really honestly don't understand and haven't been able to understand or get an answer as to how the town can build something like that out of cement, a structure in a flood zone. Yet, these people can't put a shed in their backyard. That doesn't seem right to me,” Pompton Plains resident Janice Manger said.

Officials estimated that the park could cost up to half a million dollars. They said that amount does not include lighting, bathrooms or ongoing repairs.
