The Town of East Hampton is considering changing the local law for how restaurants and bars acquire permits for live music.
The newly proposed legislation would force businesses to reapply annually for music permits. Some fear it might leave Montauk with fewer places for musicians to perform.
Montauk musician Thomas Muse plays at spots around town with his band, Jettykoon. He says Montauk was a bit wild in 2015, to which he believes the legislation is in response, but he thinks things have quieted down since then.
He says the proposed change is "really going to put our gigs in jeopardy."
More than 100 people turned up at a town meeting Thursday night about changing live music permits.
Laraine Creegan, of the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, says no one was in favor of the change.
News 12 is told that town officials during the meeting decided to table a vote on the legislation and decided to work with the community on a compromise.
Musician Nancy Atlas says officials should enact legislation that makes it easier to play live music.
News 12 did not immediately hear back from the Town of East Hampton for comment.
