Friends of Scott Hapgood, a Darien man charged with manslaughter in the death of a hotel worker in Anguilla, have started an online petition to have Connecticut's politicians get involved with his case.
Hapgood says it was self-defense.
The petition asks Connecticut's lawmakers to intervene on a humanitarian basis. They say there have been threats on Hapgood's life and that going back to Anguilla for legal proceedings is dangerous. The petition argues it could be done remotely and supporters want to see the charges dropped.
President Donald Trump tweeted about the case Monday after Hapgood's wife went on "Fox & Friends."
"Will be looking into the Scott Hapgood case, and the Island of Anguilla," he wrote. "Something looks and sounds very wrong. I know Anguilla will want to see this case be properly and justly resolved!"
