The winter weather is taking a toll on the roads, leaving them with numerous potholes, including in Mount Olive.
Fifteen thousand to 20,000 cars a day drive through International Drive.
“They're here and usually between the winter and the springtime is when we really get the potholes forming, as you see in every other town around and on the highways,” says Tim Quinn, Mt. Olive Director of Public Works. “This is just a critical time with the climate keeps changing, we're getting the cold weather, we're getting warm weather along with all the moisture it just wreaks havoc on our roadways. We try to keep up with it. Any day we have that the weather is permitting, we're out patching.”
The two-person DPW crews work quickly, shoveling hot asphalt and sealing the potholes.
The town runs two crews a day and can use up to eight tons of asphalt each day just plugging the potholes.
Quinn says the crews fill the potholes any day they are able to work.
During the winter, snow and freezing temps mean cracks in the roadway expand during the freeze and refreeze, forming the potholes that can make driving a mess.
Snowplows can take up chunks of roadway and patches.
It can erase a day's work, but the town says it can't leave the streets unplowed.
The pothole problem is serious enough that the town allocated an extra $1.5 million this year for road resurfacing.
