Some NJ Transit commuters are making contingency plans in case of an Amtrak strike at the end of the month.

Amtrak employees have been waiting for a new contract since 1999. They say if they don?t get one by the end of January, they may go on strike. The strike would affect thousands of NJ Transit commuters because most of the rails are owned by Amtrak.

Approximately 218,000 NJ Transit trains travel on Amtrak-owned lines daily. Some commuters say if the strike happens, they may have to adjust their work schedules just to get a ride. Some say they may carpool, while others say they may work from home.

Meanwhile, NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel says all service would not be lost. Stessel says contingency plans are still being made. Part of the plans include having buses pick people up at NJ Transit stations and drop them off at PATH stations.
