A 51-year-old man from Michigan fell while riding an escalator at Newark Liberty International Airport, suffered a heart attack, and was saved by the quick actions of seven Port Authority police officers.
The incident happened Tuesday around 10:15 a.m. inside Terminal B.
According to witnesses, the man was standing on the escalator when he started swaying.
Witnesses say he then fell backward, hit his head and continued to hit his head on each step as his body continued down the escalator.
A family behind the man began screaming for help, and that's when seven Port Authority police officers, including Officer Nick Brucato, sprang into action.
"Checked his vitals, gave him a sternum rub on his chest, and realized he wasn't breathing," says Brucato. "Dragged him off the escalator to this area right here. I watch where we began our CPR and use the AED."
The officers worked together on reviving the man for 30 minutes, taking turns administering CPR, eventually getting him to breathe on his own.
He is now getting treatment in Newark's Beth Israel Hospital and is expected to survive.
The other officers involved include Phil Campo, Joe Francavilla, Matthew Rosati, Steve Magnavita, Michael Raccioppi and Michael Tilatitsky.
