Same-sex civil unions are legal in the Garden State, but couples looking to have ceremonies in a popular wedding spot in Monmouth County will be denied.
Many same-sex couples are outraged that they are banned from having their civil union ceremonies in the boardwalk pavilion in Ocean Grove, which is owned by the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association The Methodist organization allows members of any religion to marry there, but same-sex couples are not allowed to use it for civil unions. The association says the United Methodist Church Book of Discipline does not permit it.
Many say the policy violates their rights.
?No matter if that person is black, white, gay, Asian, Muslim, whatever ? if person A can do something and person B cannot ? that?s discrimination,? said resident Kit Kaplan.
New Jersey?s public advocate said the policy appears to violate the law and should be reversed. The state attorney general has not commented on the issue.
