Pompton Lakes turns the water back on
Crews in Passaic County have repaired a water main that was broken by a contractor early Monday morning.
A contractor working on the Pompton Lakes Streetscape Project broke the 8-inch main near Wanaque and Colfax avenues at approximately 3 a.m. The pipe was not on the map, but ran through the town?s main street.
The town was forced to shut the water off after the pipe was hit in order to make repairs. About 40 businesses were affected by the incident, but only two flooded.
Some owners scrambled to leave the area as water poured into their stores. Malcom Price, a local owner, says he arrived to find his basement flooded, with water pouring in through electrical outlets. ?It was really scary,? Price says.
Zayna?s Cuts for Kids was lucky to not be affectted by the town?s lack of water. ?Our bottles are pre-filled from the night before so it didn?t affect it,? Dallal Bayan says.
The broken main was built in 1914. Crews have restored water pressure to the area, and the town?s water is back on.
Work on the Pompton Lakes Streetscape Project is expected to continue for a few more months. Emergency Management says work will be done overnight so the roads will be clear during the day.
