NEWARK - A class of mostly military veterans turned fire recruits graduated yesterday in Newark.

Thanks to a $7 million grant from the federal government that made hiring veterans a priority, 28 of the 31 recruits served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is the first class of veteran firefighters recruited to the department since World War II.
