Lakewood police say they recovered a loaded .22-caliber handgun at the Oak Street School Tuesday morning.
They say a 9-year-old fourth-grader and a 10-year-old fifth-grader are in police custody, facing weapons charges for allegedly bringing the weapon to school on the bus.
Lakewood police and the school district confirm they found the gun in a student's backpack around 9 a.m. No one was hurt.
"I just heard he brought a gun, and a teacher got him, and it was a .22," said Nathan Castilo, an 11-year-old fifth-grader who spoke with News 12 New Jersey with permission from his mother.
Authorities say another child reported the 9-year-old student for allegedly threatening classmates with the gun on a school bus. Officials say he intended to shoot another child.
The school says it posted information about the incident on its website to keep parents informed, and classes went on as normal for the day.
According to the school's website, security identified and apprehended the student, took the weapon and called police. The building was not placed on lockdown.
But while the school day went on as normal, parents had some concerns.
"I think parents learned to have guns secured or don't have a gun at all," said Rene Garcia, from Lakewood.
Police did not immediately explain where the children obtained a loaded gun.
