Police seek person who stole backpack during Edison train rescue
Police say a man’s backpack was stolen while he and two others rescued a woman who fell from the train platform in Edison Friday.
Officials say three men went down onto the train tracks after an unconscious woman fell six feet off the platform.
The men lifted her up just seconds before a train arrives.
Madhuri Recherla later said she fainted because she did not eat or drink so she could get to the train station on time.
The woman was taken to the hospital with a fractured knee and broken ankle.
One of the men, Anil Vennavalai of Piscataway, had his backpack stolen while they were helping the woman off the tracks.
Vennavalai says his work laptop and ID, $200 cash, three expensive sets of headphones and his train tickets were in the backpack.
He says he is glad the woman, who is also his coworker, is doing well but he also says he is disappointed.
Police have not yet figured out who stole the bag.
Edison's police chief says, "This theft, perpetrated in the midst of such a selfless good deed, seems so very disgusting and outrageous."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Edison Police Department.
